A common questions is, "Does [this] feel right?" Or anything of the sort.
Sensations are just that - sensations. There is no right or wrong. It's like telling someone they aren't sad enough. HUH? This guy's mom just died, and you're saying he's not sad enough? Maybe because of age, maturity, etc., his depth of feeling isn't the same as yours, but how do you justify telling someone how they're supposed to feel? Definitely, a MAJORITY of people have similar sensations when singing. Since these are experiential, we can't always rely on them to sing. When I found nasopharyngeal, forward, bright, etc. resonance, it was right in my face. My nose felt like it was vibrating. Instead of finding the sound that accompanied the feeling, I just chased the feeling. I was SO NASAL my next lesson! My teacher laughed and explained how to find it on my own. "Right after our lesson, go find it. An hour later, go find it again. Keep doing this until I see you next time. There's a chance you won't find it again until next week. If this happens, don't worry about it. I can tell if a student practices even if they weren't able to get the sound from last week. I won't kick you out of your lesson just because you weren't able to find a new sound." The WORST part of this is that sometimes you do need to chase a sensation like breath support! Are you engaging the correct muscles? Some people are also strong enough to not feel the muscles engage! There always is and isn't an answer, and that's what makes singing/teaching so fun for me! Know yourself! Grow yourself! :D

I use a rather simplistic system of voice classification which leads into the more complex if anyone wants to do more digging. I say fach is for classical music. PERIOD! You COULD use it, but it's kinda pointless. I'm 30. I sing opera. I don't even have a fach yet! So it's even more pointless to classify most young voices, ESPECIALLY in contemporary! Does your voice naturally want to hold out notes? Or does it want to keep moving notes?
With good technique, you should be able to do both. BUT have you heard a voice holding out a note but beneath it all, it just wants to flutter? Have you heard a voice do runs but gets slower the longer the run is? Anyway, that's it! Most of us have one or the other. Use your natural strength to make some sort of mark for yourself! Flutter voices tend to be smaller in nature, and holding voices tend to be bigger.Since I do sing opera, let's relate it to fach Smaller flutters are coloratura/leggiero. Bigger flutters are like the full lyric coloratura. Smaller holds can be the light lyrics. Bigger holds can go into the dramatics. Know yourself! Grow yourself! |
